THE BRITISH QUEEN: Are holding community coffee morning on the second Thursday of each month from 10am to noon. Cake, tea and coffee are £1.50. There is a bookstall, bring and buy stall and a raffle, all in the aid of charity.

SUMMER FAIR: The Summer Fair is on Sunday on the Triangle, Lower Willingdon from noon to 3pm. There will be many stalls and fun events taking place on Orchard Parade, The Triangle and the Green for children and adults. There will be a children’s procession starting at Rapsons Road School at 11.30am and the children will open the fair at noon. The children will be dressed as Scarecrows. Stall holders may set up any time after 10am. So, come and enjoy the fun, and let’s hope that the weather is kind this year. Organized by Willingdon Triangle Traders. CONCERT: A concert was recently given by Sussex Strings in aid of the Beachy Head Chaplaincy Trust www.bhct.org.uk. It was well attended at Trinity Church where they played pieces by George Frederick Handel, the Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, followed by an English Suite by local composer Paul Lewis. There were four movements March, Meditation, Jig and Jaunt. Then the orchestra played Orchestral Suite in D Major by Johann Sebastian Bach, all four movements, Gavotte, Bouree, Air and Gigue. Then we had a Romance by Gerald Finzi followed by Concerto in D Minor for Two Violins by Johann Sebastian Bach. The two violin solos were performed by musical director Simon Smith and Carl Bradford, with harpsichord accompanied by Alastair Macfadyen. This was supposed to be the last piece of the concert, but as always they give an encore of L Cohen’s Hallelujah. This was the ninth concert given by the Sussex String Orchestra. The group formed following the request of local string players who wanted to get together and play some of the vast repertoire of string music. FLOWER CLUB: The Edith Pierce Competition and Summer Party was a great success. It was held on July 1 and attended by numerous members and visitors. The competition was entitled Royal Birthday and the competitors entered colourful and varied interpretations in their arrangements. The Judge was Barbara Harris. The winner of the Edith Pierce Cup was Anne Taylor with an outstanding arrangement of pink and blue flowers set in a handbag. The winner of the Margery Tomkin Cup was Anne Bathard-Smith with an unusual arrangement of delicate flowers and plants on The Queens Hat. The winner of the engraved shield was Liz Peel whose excellent exhibit was in red, white and blue and included a Union Flag. The awards were presented by judge, Barbara Harris, who praised the winning entries and said it was good to see so much interest in the club and competition.

The Summer Tea Party followed and as usual was delicious and enjoyed by everyone. The members and visitors took part in a quiz of cryptic questions with a varying degree of success. A name the committee member’s photo competition caused much amusement as the photographs showed them as babies. It was very difficult with few correct answers. The name the countries from their flags was more successful with many correct answers. The raffle was drawn and notices of forthcoming events in the region were read out.

A really well planned and enjoyable afternoon.

The next practice meeting is today, Friday. It is entitled Big and Bold (larger arrangement) and will be led by Jackie Harris. The next club meeting is on August 5 with a demonstration called Supermarket Dash. The demonstrator will be Chris Campbell-Dykes. Members and visitors welcome.
