APPLE DAY: October 21 is Apple Day, a celebration of apples and orchards. This year there has been a bumper crop of apples. Along the Hawth Hill road cutting going into Seaford from Bishopstone are a number of notable apple trees. These include Golden Noble, an old English cultivar. It has pink flowers in spring giving us a sweet-flavoured cooking apple. There is also the Winter Banana apple, an heirloom variety originating in the USA. It is said to have a banana flavour, although it is more commonly planted as a pollinator as apples rarely ripen without help in British summers.
