LADIES GROUP: Falmer Ladies’ Group for their July meeting, welcomed Daisy Asquith to talk about her most interesting career as a BBC and Channel 4 film and documentary maker. Members heard how Daisy had progressed from being a secretary to where she is today having produced 21 documentaries. To introduce her work she showed part 2 of a 3 part series that follows children from Zimbabwe, Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan over their first five years in Britain called Britain: My New Home. Watching this film showed just how Daisy built up a trust and such a good relationship with these children, which continues still today now that they are young adults. We heard that Daisy will carry on making documentaries but will be joining Goldsmiths’ College in London as a lecturer in September, and we all wished her well.

TEAS: Sunday Afternoon Teas are still being served in the Parish Hall and a warm welcome is to be found there even when the weather is bad, like last Sunday, but still visitors came to sample the many homemade cakes made by the villagers. One visitor from America, and who was staying with a villager, came just over a week ago and was interested in the old school clock which hangs on the wall, and remarked that it was not working. He explained that he was a horologist and would like to make it work again, and he has. He did not want any recompense and said he was happy to do something for such a delightful village. How kind is that?

CONGRATULATIONS: To our Sue and Simon Barnes on the birth of their first grandchild, a little girl to Sarah, the wife of their son David.
