100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 27 August 1915. Uckfield Petty Session. Collarless Dogs. May Sands, of Fletching, was summoned for allowing two dogs to be on the highway at Piltdown Common without collars on 18 August. Defendant did not appear. PC Lusted stated that he saw defendant with two collie dogs, neither of which had a collar on. Defendant told witness that collars spoiled the dogs’ coats, and so she left them off. Fined 12s.

No Lights. Thomas Appleby, a farmer, of Fletching, was summoned for riding a bicycle without a light on the road leading from Isfield to Buckham Hill on August 18. Defendant did not appear. PC Jesse Mayne said he saw defendant at 10.40pm. He had no light and said that he had run out of oil. The lamp was cold. A fine of 5s was imposed.
