100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 3 December 1915. Railway Porter’s Narrow Escape. George Seal, a porter at Uckfield Station, had a very narrow escape from death on Wednesday evening. The 6.21 train to Brighton was standing on the up side and he was in the act of taking the ‘wheels’ over the level crossing for luggage, when he found the incoming down train was close on him. He dropped the wheels and, with a leap, sprang clear, but in front of the other train which fortunately did not start at the moment. The engine caught the truck, dropping it some 40 feet up the permanent way and demolishing it, but fortunately the porter escaped with nothing more than a severe fright. He has not been at the station very long.
