100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 24 December 1915. Poultry: The Board of Agriculture have passed a scheme for East Sussex and other counties, for the supply of sittings of eggs to be sent out early next spring from approved breeds and strains of poultry at a very nominal sum. The county have already arranged for three stations or depots where the eggs may be purchased. And it is probable that there may be another added, making four in all. The breeds at the present time are two stations, which will supply eggs, from selected layers, of White Wyandotte, and one station of White Leghorns. If another is added it will be for Light Sussex. These birds are all in topping condition, and are of really first-class egg laying strains, therefore it will be seen that it is giving real help to the small poultry keeper by allowing him to get a good strain of fresh blood at a very small cost. He has only to pay 2s per dozen, and is allowed to have up to three sittings, a sitting to comprise one dozen eggs. He may get unfertiles replaced, so there is a chance to get from such a number of eggs a really nice pen of pullets which, if properly managed, should produce a lot of food in the shape of eggs next year.
