100 YEARS AGO: Sussex Express 7 April 1916. Piltdown Soldier’s Chums. Better Than Rabbit Shooting. Mr J Charsfield, of Holly Farm, Piltdown, has received a very interesting letter from his grandson, Jack Marten, who has been at the front for some time past. ‘...everyone has two chances out here, to kill or be killed, that’s how we look at it. It’s a bit hot here sometimes. I expect you read in the papers how we got back the lost trenches, and how the old siege batteries put their shells into Fritz’s trenches, and there are more for them yet as soon as he starts his little game. Remember me to old Bill Chaplin, also Ben when you see them. Tell old Ben there is plenty of sport out here. When you see someone’s head pop up just let drive. It beats rabbit shooting because if you miss him, he gets you.’
