This is held every year to raise funds for the Kit Wilson Trust for animal welfare in memory of a lovely lady sadly missed. HISTORY SOCIETY: This month’s meeting was a feast for the eyes as Melvin and Pam Smith led the members through the New Forest with their beautiful photographs. Designated a hunting park in the eleventh century it has survived two massive upheavals, the first during the Second World War when it was ploughed up for crops and again in 1976 when it was decimated by fire. But nature regenerates itself and this lovely area became a National Park in 2004. Sadly the influence of the Commoners is waning as Commoners’ Cottages are demolished and many of the owners of the new houses are not interested in exercising their rights. These are the right to pasture ponies, donkeys cattle and sheep, the right to set their pigs out to eat the acorns, the right of estover which allows them to gather firewood, the right of marl which means they can dig clay and turbary to cut peat.

However, the 10 Verderers still safeguard the landscape and deal with disputes in court and the five Agisters oversee the ponies and help preserve the traditional landscape.

Melvin demonstrated with his photographs just how the landscape is changing as the amount of grazing stock diminishes but it is still beautiful enough to merit a visit and to lift the soul.
