SUCCESS: Despite the terrible problems with access, the race meeting on Monday raised a large sum of money for the charity of the day and those racegoers who made it enjoyed a fantastic afternoon, according to CEO Kate Hills.

LEVEL CROSSING: Despite the very short notice, upwards of 250 people attended the public meeting held at the racecourse last Friday. This was largely thanks to the combined efforts of local residents and the Parish Council who mounted their own publicity campaign. Network Rail was in defiant mood and announced that it would be proceeding to install the barriers come what way. The public feeling was overwhelmingly hostile to Network Rail and eventually it was stated that a way to open the gates manually would be discussed as a matter of urgency. We could reach a compromise solution, but the company has persistently refused to follow it up. Strong representations continue and Lewes District Council has stated publicly that it will not support any actions that are in breach of the law. Our local businesses are suffering badly as a result of Network Rail’s actions, but there is no sign of compensation being offered. Please, do try to support local businesses in spite of the increased effort that may be required. We need them to stay in business if we only look at the situation selfishly.

NO JUMBLE: Regretably the jumble sale planned by Plumpton Youthspace for October 31 has been cancelled because of organisational difficulties. The next sale is scheduled for November 14, organised by the Flower Club.
