LOCAL HISTORY: Polegate and Willingdon Local History Society meet today, Friday, when our speaker is Brian Freeland on the Sussex Folk. Doors open at 6.30pm, meeting starts at 7pm. All welcome.

On Sunday, Long Man Gallop, 9.5 miles with Tony W. Meet bus 12A, 9.46am to Friston Pond where walk starts at 10am. Dry lunch. On Wednesday, Linear, Gardens at Milton Street, 11 miles with Clare K. Meet bus 125, 9.55am Terminus Road to Glen Close, Wannock where walk starts at 10.15am. Dry lunch. Tithe Barn, Alfriston finish, return via bus 12 to Eastbourne.

DRAMA GROUP: Quiz Night tomorrow, Saturday, from 7.30pm to 10pm at Polegate Community Centre. Teams of up to six people, £4 per person. Bring your own drinks and snacks. Tea and coffee will be available in the interval. A fundraising event. Book at box office Archer and Partners 483348.

SUMMER FAIR: Polegate Windmill are holding their Summer Fair on Sunday, on the Platt at the windmill when John Purcell will bring Con Brio again to entertain with a mixture of music during the afternoon. Once again we will need helpers to run stalls and tables. Please contact Patricia Stevens on 734496. Also required cakes for the cake stall and items for the bric-a-brac stall.

NEW EVENING WI: A meeting is taking place on Tuesday at 7.30pm at Polegate Community Centre, where a new name and format will be discussed.

STEAM FESTIVAL: Summer Steam Festival at Spa Valley Railway, had interesting exhibits at each station on the line. At Tunbridge Wells there was a model railway on display by one of the local model railway clubs. As well as the shop, cinema and Emily open as usual. Then at High Rocks, the hotel was open. At Groombridge the Weald and Sussex Stationery Engine group from East Grinstead was in steam. The signal box was also open to view. Whilst at Eridge there was a display of classic cars and traction engines, including steam rollers and miniature models on display. Also the barbecue tent and real ale and cider tent. Whilst in the siding at Eridge was Ugly as part of a display with some trucks. Whilst running two trains on the line one had the chance to try out new beers and cider in Kate and enjoy the countryside as well, dodging some of the showers.
