Footnotes: One sure sign that Christmas is just around the corner, is the amount of free offers, ‘gifts’, special discounts, that flood through the letterbox, Every year they seem to increase in number, and this year they have excelled themselves. People I have never met, or spoken to present me with Christmas cards, strangers phone me to thank me for my loyalty to their companies throughout the year, when I could swear I have never heard of them. If I added up all the discounts, free vouchers, etc., that I have received so far, I could live for nothing until next Spring. They are, I am afraid, all going to be unlucky. I have a limited income, which the government is nibbling away at via low interest rates and high prices, so there is very little left for anything other than essentials. But still the glossy brochures, the sultry voiced telephone calls continue. As soon as the festive season is over, it will be time to ask the wonderful chap who gardens for me to return and get to grips with the weeds and shrubs that are already starting to cover all the flower beds. They return with the same certainty as those unwanted leaflets and free offers hurtle through my letterbox, each year. If only I could get rid of the weeds as easily as I dispose of them. Enjoy your Christmas shopping, go safely and have a good week.
