A local club which offers a range of social activities for the blind and visually impaired is inviting new members and volunteers to join them.

The Hastings and Rother Voluntary Association for the Blind (HRVAB) VIP Club (for Visually Impaired People) meets on Wednesday afternoons.

The club’s group leader, Marie Turner, says the aim of the club is to provide visually impaired people with a social afternoon where they can meet others with similar problems and enjoy a range of activities. “Our programme for July included a Quiz (devised by volunteer Janet Heasmer),” she said. “There was also a raffle towards funds, accordion music with Louise Denny, Extend Yourself chair exercises with Diana Copp and a talk on Cruising the Norwegian Fjords by volunteer helper Rosemary Bartholomew. These were all followed by the chance to chat over refreshments.”

Club member Margaret said people who are visually impaired face many challenges. “Being able to go to the club means we can meet and share these with others who understand,” she said. “The enjoyable and varied programme offers a beacon of light into the world outside.”

HRVAB VIP club was recently selected by Burnham and District Model Railway Club (BDMRC), Somerset, to be one of their charity beneficiaries. BDMRC member John Langley (formerly of Hastings) helps raise money for charities by selling limited edition model railway wagons in 00 gauge (popular collectors’ items) to date over £41,000 has been raised.

The club has been chosen to profit from a Shepherd Neame Brewery Box Van, models of which will be on sale via exhibitions, newsletters or on the BDMRC website: burnhamanddmrc.org

The next local exhibition, where the models will be on sale, is at St Richard’s Catholic College, Ashdown Road, Bexhill, on August 8.

The VIP Club welcomes new members and volunteers. Meetings are 2.15-4.00pm. Most members are transported by HRVAB mini-bus.
