I was interested to read Pauline Cherry’s article in the Parish Pump (February 15) concerning cattle at Falmer Station.
I grew up in Berwick and can well remember truck loads of cattle belonging to Mr Dalgety arriving from Scotland by train at Berwick Railway Station and being driven down the road, accompanied by men on horseback, along Common Lane up on to the Downs above Alciston and Selmeston.
The local villagers had to make sure their garden gates were closed and it almost seemed as though the Wild West had arrived in Sussex.
The same procedure was carried out on their return from the Downs to the railway station.
