Conscript the women into National Service too

I READ Alan Lehman’s letter (letters, 4 May) with interest as I too noticed that the question was not neutral. Not only that, the article contained an extraordinary suggestion by Dame Vera, that National Service should be brought back for young men.

I have never imagined that Dame Vera has cruised the streets of large towns when the clubs were turning out their belligerent, brawling boozers but, had she done so, she would know that women are every bit as guilty as men at disturbing the peace and much, much more once time has been called.

If National Service is to be re-introduced, women should be conscripted too, though why the army should take these ‘Accident & Emergency addicts’ baffles me.
