WITH horror, I witnessed the billowing clouds of smoke being emitted from the Newhaven Incinerator on Bank Holiday Monday (May 31). They were gushing out of the main body of the incinerator as well as wispier columns from the chimney.
On arrival at my destination in South Heighton, the air was thick with the acrid stench of burning plastics, which was all the more startling considering the assurance from the County Council that the incinerator would produce relatively low emissions. This was clearly not so. I would very much appreciate an explanation as to why this happened?
Was it a case of a test going wrong and ‘it’ll be alright on the night,’ I wonder?
