LETTER: Council should take a look at the empty properties

RE:The Canon O’Donnell building:

Things have gone quiet for a couple of years on what to do with this now dilapidated building. Is this a deliberate ploy ?

I’ve noticed this happen in the past where developers put out a suggested plan that cause much local opposition. Nothing is heard, all goes quiet for ages, then, hoping the opposition, forgets about it or changes their mind or loses interest, (and when the developer feels safe), goes a head with what they wanted to do in the first place anyway. Is anything moving on this ?

Lack of parking I seem to remember, was one of the reasons ( I don’t remember all the other objections ).

I wonder if a style of house along the lines of those in Paddock Lane, with the house on top of it’s own garage, would be more agreeable ?

Perhaps the council in their wisdom ( made up from people that actually live in Lewes.. of course.) should look more into empty properties in the town and arrange that the owners or developers do something to make their properties fit for habitation, at a price people can afford ( rent) once more. It won’t solve the whole housing situation but it might alleviate the need to re-develop more than one of their ( our ) properties in the town. Just a thought.
