LETTER: Facility time is an asset

It was refreshing that you called for a debate on possible attacks on union facility time by Brighton & Hove buses, [Sussex Express, March 10].

For readers unfamiliar with the term, facility time allows union reps time to deal with members’ problems during the working day.

In reality, facility time also benefits management. Disputes usually arise when communications break down. They are resolved when sides start talking again. Most strikes are settled by negotiation rather than battles of strength.

Facility time allows most problems, whether health and safety, grievances or disciplinary issues, to be sorted quickly and sensibly. This has to be good for industrial relations – and for passengers using Brighton and Hove buses.
