I am disheartened at the decision to demolish the magistrates court building in Lewes.
This is a fine building, bold in design and carefully detailed to complement and integrate the corner building of the Precinct to form a whole street façade.
No other building could do this so successfully.
It would have made a perfect police headquarters being high security had not the police building in North Street been finished six months before the courts came on the market.
Equally North Street would be a far better site for an hotel having a view over Mt Caburn and linking the High Street to proposed new development further down North Street.
Is it too late to negotiate and prevent the destruction of an important part of Lewes?
