Misleading climate change statements

I am always interested in your letters pages and particularly those on climate change.

I was particularly struck by one such on 25 October headed ‘No temperature rise since 1998’ in which the letter writer stated ‘there has been no global temperature increase since 1998’ and referred to the 5th report of the IPCC.

I have gone to a summary of this report and it states categorically ‘Each of the last three decades has been successively warmer at the Earth’s surface than any preceding decade since 1850’.

It is unfortunate that climate change deniers continue to peddle misleading statements when the reality of the situation as highlighted by the report is that ‘Human influence on the climate system is clear.

‘This is evident from the increasing greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere, positive radiative forcing, observed warming and understanding of the climate system’.

The sooner governments and individuals believe what the science is telling us and introduce measures or change behaviour to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the sooner the planet will be able to recover and be fit for future generations to live upon.
