For many years a story has circulated that a tunnel ran from the basement of the old house which stood on the site of the proposed Newhaven fire station, up to the convent to the west.
It is known that a short tunnel did/does in fact exist as people have confirmed that they entered it while the building was still in existence. (Search for “SAXONHOLME” on the website www.ournewhaven.co.uk).
However nobody apparently has ever broken through the wall across the far end of the structure to ascertain whether it did in fact go further.
The entrance to the tunnel exists even to this day and it is still possible to see it from the road, so before the site is flattened for ever in order to construct the New Fire Station, hopefully the opportunity will be taken to break through the wall and prove once and for all whether the tunnel did ever extend any further.
