I was horrified to see that a parish council has objected to someone flying our national flag. It is good that Wealden District has advised Pevensey Council that the flagpoles are ‘permitted development’.
Although the gentleman wanting to fly our flag is obviusly not an Englishman, the fact he resides in our country is justification for him flying our flag.
To fly the Union Flag or the flag of St George is a privilege we can all take, something we do not see enough of, so instead of chastising him for his wishes we should all praise him for his initiative.
Many more people ought to follow his idea. We lag behind many other countries in this respect, for example a trip to Scotland will see the Saltire proudly flown at a large number of private, commercial and public buildings every day of the year!
