Public loos - are we returning to Medieval times?

Until about 150 years ago, the streets of Lewes would probably have been awash with urine and faeces: and not just dog excrement.

Our enlightened Victorian ancestors introduced public toilets but our current District Council seems hell bent on removing them. Western road is particularly badly served.

The situation is most difficult for the elderly, pregnant and otherwise incontinent.

Many of us are reluctant to throw ourselves on the mercy of pubs etc even if they are convenient, open and willing.

Is it still permissible for a gentleman to pee on the rear wheel of a parked vehicle and a lady to squat over a convenient drain? What about those with unsteady bowels?

Do we really need this return to mediaeval squalor. Surely Lewesians and their visitors deserve and can afford better.
