Why did our MP chose Lewes vacant shops as an issue

In reference to your article ‘MP hits out at ‘eyesore’ in shopping precinct’ (Express, p3, December 14), I was intrigued to understand why MP Norman Baker was raising an issue that is already being adequately addressed by fellow town and district councillors in Lewes.

Maybe the demise of the shops around Lewes are a stark and visual reminder to him about the tough and challenging trading conditions that are causing retailers to fold, and not a flagrant opportunity for Mr Baker to cling on to the very few positive outcomes from the chancellor’s recent autumn statement.

I wish local councillors (Cllrs Price, Kingham, Catlin et al) and local government officers well in their continued, and understated, efforts with ensuring the vacant premises in Cliffe Precinct are dealt with appropriately.

Matt Kent

Lewes Town Councillor (Bridge Ward)
