Hawes' hopes of hockey semis dashed

Former Lewes player Ben Hawes' outside hopes of making the semi-finals of the men's hockey event at the Beijing Olympics died this afternoon after Great Britain drew 3-3 with arch rivals Australia.
Hawes, 28, now captain of the men's team, made his debut for Lewes Hockey Club in the National League at the tender age of 15.

He looked to be leading Team GB to an historic win over the old enemy in Beijing – until a heart-breaking equaliser from the Antipodeans just two-and-a-half minutes from time.

Great Britain's slim hopes of making the last four were already all but dashed by Holland's victory over Pakistan earlier in the day.
