LEWES manager Kevin Keehan has vehemently denied reports that he was asked to resign at the board meeting on Monday night where owners decided to put the club up for sale.
The Blue Square premier side announced its intentions to sell the club in a statement on its website on Wednesday citing financial reasons, and reports surfaced suggesting that Keehan was asked to hand in his resignation at the meeting.
But speaki
ng to the Sussex Express Keehan strongly denied any such mention of his position at the club when the board met.
He said, "The meeting was about the club's finances and what has gone on the website asking for investors to come forward to help financially.
"At no time was I asked to resign. I wasn't asked to resign in the meeting and haven't been since."
Saturday's 2-0 defeat against Wrexham was the club's tenth of the season and, having won just two out of 17 games, Lewes are rooted to the foot of the Blue Square premier.
Keehan admits matters off the field were not ideal as he tries to avoid the drop, and although he said he has not had time to properly speak to his players, he urged them to focus on winning football matches.
"It doesn't help, obviously, but we have got to be professional and get on with it," he declared.
"It's obviously a concern but there are lots of clubs who will be trying to make ends meet.
"Going out of the FA Cup meant we didn't get that money coming into but that would only have delayed this for two or three weeks."
But he admitted his, and the club's future, were very much uncertain, adding, "We will have to wait and see what happens, but no one has left at the moment."
Keehan also defended the decision to play controversial striker Chamal Fenelon in the defeat at Wrexham. Fenelon returned after being suspended by the club following an incident with another player against Wick.
Keehan said: "(Fenelon) was suspended pending us getting all the facts.
"We got Chamal's version and we spoke to Wick who said that was pretty much what happened so felt he had been punished enough."
When asked to comment on the speculation surrounding Keehan's position, chief executive Martin Elliott said, "Kevin Keehan is still working at the football club."
