TASTY was how a friend described Simon Gustaffson's performance on Monday night at Arlington.
Tasty is also a word one could use to describe the whole performance by the Eastbourne Eagles against Swindon.
It augurs well for the future and, while shivering on the terraces, one could not help be warmed by the prospect of even more to come from the new-look team.
It was an important result for new promoter Martin Hagon.
He – along with Bob Dugard – have invested heavily in bringing a highly attractive team to tapes for the 2008 season, and there are high hopes in Sussex it will be a successful campaign.
Hagon is certainly finding out about the trials and tribulations on speedway promoting.
The opening night on Saturday was rained off.
It was a brave decision to re-stage the meeting 48 hours later because, over the years, Monday has seen some dire attendances at Arlington.
Certainly there were fewer on the terraces than would have been the case on Saturday but the numbers looked to me to be far from a disaster.
Obviously Hagon and his team were keen to get some track time before the Good Friday clashes with Poole.
The Eagles are in Dorset in the morning and back at Arlington for the evening.
This derby fixture is usually one of the best attended of the year at Arlington and all concerned with the club will hope the weather will not disrupt this fixture.
THE RESULT IN A NUTSHELL
Eastbourne 52 Swindon 41
Top scorers: Eagles: Scott Nicholls (above) and Lee Richardson 10;
Robins: Leigh Adams 17
Best race: Heat 8 as Lewis Bridger stalked Mads Korneliussen before passing him on the run to the chequered flag.
Best moment: Scott Nicholls leaning on Leigh Adams in heat 15 and pulling away to win.
Surprise package: Cameron Woodward – his only defeat by a visitor was at the hands of Adams.
Story of the meeting: Eastbourne took control in the middle of the match; were pegged back by a Swindon 8-1 in Heat 11, but the Eagles were always in control. Adams was the visitors' only heat winner.
Fastest time: Heat 5 – 56.8 seconds.
Referee: Phil Griffin – Got it all moving at a brisk pace – just what the fans wanted on a cold night. From this reporter's position, got the big decisions right.
