I must start this report with a disclaimer. Not just that it could damage your health but that I wasn't at Withdean to watch this particular disaster! Ironically I was staying at a very nice hotel on the sunny Med called "Les Mouettes" (The Seagulls). This only lessened the pain slightly.
It was another Withdean disaster. I picked up the story as it unfolded courtesy of the northstandchat website (the official Albion site was embarrassed into a long silence apparently). I can't record most of the ongoing comments as they were mainly e
xpletives. Calls for "Adams out" and for Dean Wilkins to come back will give you some idea.
A few basic facts – Walsall had BOTH their full-backs sent off, straight red cards, in the first 33 minutes. Brighton therefore had 80 minutes against 10 men, and 60 minutes against just nine. But the Saddlers scored the only goal of the game just before half-time with a header by Dwayne Mattis from a free-kick. The Albion failed to score.
It was a disaster on several fronts. The players will be rock-bottom on confidence. The club will lose out on finances as crowd numbers plummet following the drop down the league. But worst is the effect on the long-suffering Withdean fans. Will they come back for more?
It is often said that it is hard to play against 10 men (even harder against nine?). Really that is nonsense and no excuse. You have two spare men and just need to use them intelligently. I remember playing against nine men (OK, a long time ago) in the Sussex Sunday league and the team scoring 27! Double figures might have been wishful thinking – but one or two would have been nice. Walsall deserve huge credit for not conceding but the Albion were terrible.
There was aimless kicking of the ball for their keeper to catch. We seemed afraid to shoot despite their keeper looking dodgy, but capable of catching crosses all day long.
Manager Adams summed the disaster up saying that we didn't defend a free-kick, against nine men we should have won the game, and he couldn't defend the players or himself. "I hope they go home embarrassed with the effort and work they put in today". He ended by saying they had to take the result on the chin. I hope it isn't a knock-out!
I picked up a few more sad ideas from watching fans. Perhaps Falmer will need to be redesigned for 2,500 fans? We sacked a manger who finished seventh in this division – how long has Adams got?
The Withdean experience this year continues to be a nightmare. We haven't managed a win in the league this season. This particularly bad display follows the very poor defeat by Leyton Orient. What next?
Well, next up is the Carling Cup game against the richest side in the world! The unlucky family member that used my ticket for the Walsall game offered the suggestion that a calculator may be needed! Just joking of course – I hope! It is likely to be against Manchester City reserves after all and so we may not see £32.5million in one player on the Withdean pitch? Although Man City did put six goals past England's number one keeper, David James, on Saturday!
