Seagulls Scene: What a disappointment

Disappointing Saturday! After the FA Cup exit the Huddersfield game was meant to be the start of a charge up League One. Disappointing – manager Micky Adams put out our strongest team. Disappointing – the new midfield didn't gel. Disappointing – missing three points meant our chances of making the play-offs are negligible. We lost one-nil!
The first-half was lacklustre. Glenn Murray managed a volley that clipped the bar. Andrew Whing heard our desperate shouts of "shoot" and did, but his attempt was saved. Our vocal efforts were mainly reserved for the ref and his South side assistant.
The latter, from where I was sitting, seemed to get every throw-in and offside wrong. Not that I'm biased of course, but he seemed not to see Huddersfield forwards offside but was eagle-eyed in the second half when spotting ours!

Early in the second-half we had a good shout for a penalty. Referee Steve Cook waved play on. Huddersfield made a quick break and, after a clever interchange, Michael Collins tapped home for the Terriers. That was on 50 minutes and turned out to be the only goal of the game.

I thought the officials were poor but we can't blame them for the defeat! Mr Cook even gave us a penalty. Nicky Forster made an excellent run down the left and into the area. The ref decided Worthington brought him down. Our captain doesn't miss many penalties – but did this one. To be fair, Matt Glennon, guessing right and diving right, made a great save. Worse from our viewpoint, he managed to block Bradley Johnson's follow-up shot to preserve the Terriers' lead.

Brighton attacked with passion for the last 15 minutes. They came close but on this day nothing was going to get past Huddersfield's hero Glennon. Bradley Johnson did beat him with a thunderbolt free-kick from all of 35 yards which clipped the bar instead of bulging the net.

On the day we weren't good enough but I wonder what would happen if Adams told his team to attack from the start?

What are the positives? We didn't get wet at Withdean – only very cold. The sausage and chips at half-time were comforting. Michel Kuipers had a good game in the Albion goal. I'm afraid I'm struggling to find anything else positive about Saturday!

Tuesday night saw the long trip up to Stockport and Edgeley Park. Adams dropped Andrew Whing bringing back Colin Hawkins to central defence. Stuart Fleetwood was preferred to Joe Anyinsah. In goal Kuipers was making his 250th appearance for the Albion.

In brief it was more disappointment! We had an equal share of possession, looked the better team, and had twice as many attempts on goal. But lost 2-0! We failed to clear two corners for the Stockport goals and failed to take any of our chances.

Their decisive second was bizarre. Murray sliced his attempt to clear onto the woodwork (what was our leading scorer doing back there anyway?). It rebounded to a Stockport midfielder whose shot was adjudged by the ref to have hit Johnson's arm. He gave a penalty. It was 2-0 and the game lost.

Confidence has gone and luck has left us. Forster hit a post. Murray put the ball in the net but the ref decided unfairly. At the end Virgo crashed a powerful header against the bar. When is our next goal going to come? This was Brighton's fourth loss on the trot.

We are too good to go down, aren't we? But reside in 19th spot just one point above the drop zone!

I have thought of a very important positive – Falmer!

I'm very pleased to pass on details about the start of the new stadium. The appointed contractors, the Buckingham Group, take possession of the site in early December. Work will begin immediately!

The site will be prepared for an official "kick-off" ceremony on Wednesday, December 17. I hope to attend with my camera! This will mark the start of construction of our new stadium – watch this space!

The bulk excavation is scheduled to start in April. Before then there will be extensive Village Way works, including top soil stripping, mains changes, drainage and lighting. Exciting times!

Chief Executive Martin Perry has confirmed the archaeologists' dig has cleared the way for work to begin. He says there will be regular updates in the match programme and on the club website.

There are plans to erect a webcam so that we can see the progress! All positive stuff!

FALMER - Great news that the work will be starting soon. As the season so far has been disappointing we do need something to cheer us up!!
