Sussex County Cricket Club have announced that batsman Joe Gatting has signed a one-year extension to his contract at The PROBIZ County Ground, which will see him remain at Hove until at least the end of the 2013 season.

24 year-old Gatting has been with Sussex since the age of 15 and made his first-class debut against Cambridge UCCE in April 2009, following three seasons as a professional footballer with Brighton & Hove Albion.

His maiden LV=County Championship century came in the penultimate match of the 2011 season as Sussex secured their First Division status with victory over Worcestershire at New Road.

He played six LV=CC matches, ten Friends Life t20 matches and seven Clydesdale Bank 40 games in the 2011 season, which included a List A best of 122 as Sussex piled up a record 399 for 4 from 40 overs, also against Worcestershire at Horsham. His opening stand of 210 with Ed Joyce is a Sussex record.

Gatting said of his contract extension, “I’m very pleased to have extended my contract. I’m excited about the next two years and hopefully I can continue my good form from the end of last season to make a big impact”.

Sussex’s Professional Cricket Manager Mark Robinson said, “We’re delighted Joe has committed himself to the club for a further year. In cricketing terms he is still quite inexperienced due to his time in football, and we believe the best of him is still to come.

“The last third of the summer showed Joe’s full potential when he scored his maiden Championship hundred and his first one-day hundred.”
