SUSSEX CRICKET LEAGUE 2ND XI SCENE Glynde do well to get game on – but maybe wish they hadn’t
Glynde 2nd XI did well to get their game on in Division Two – but they may wish they hadn’t bothered after losing by 93 runs at home to Bexhill.
Bexhill won the toss and batted. This proved difficult early on, but steady contributions from Jeremy Wassell (29), Neil Blatchly (27) and Jack Munro (23) held the middle order together after early wickets had fallen.
However, the innings then collapsed to 135-7, before an 8th wicket Partnership of 58 between youngsters Cameron Burgon (39 not out) and Anthony Sturridge (24) got Bexhill up to 210-8.
Glynde’s leading bowlers were Lee Atkinson, who bowled unchanged for 27 overs, taking 4-78, and Joe Fingerneissl (2-40).
Glynde struggled in their chase, with only Chris Baker (35), Jack Fingerneissl (27) and Ben Bignell (16) reaching double figures.
Neil Blatchy (3-27), Gary Johnson (3-36) and Will Baylis (2-30) did the damage, as Glynde completely collapsed.
This Saturday Glynde’s 2nd XI travel to St James’s Montefiore hoping to bounce back from this defeat.
The only other game to go ahead in the division was Ifield v Pulborough which was won by hosts Ifield by seven wickets.
The three other games in the 2nd XI Division Two were abandoned before a ball was bowled. Goring By Sea v Findon, Haywards Heath v Roffey and Sidley v St James’s Montefiore were all weather victims.
One of only two games to go ahead in 2nd XI Division Three (East) included the local derby between Seaford and Hellingly, and was won by the visitors, Hellingly, by a hefty 164 runs.
Hosts Seaford won the toss and elected to bowl first. Despite John P Smith’s efforts in returning 4-36, they couldn’t keep their visitors’ run total down to a manageable level and Hellingly returned 212-8 in 53 overs. Gavin Sutherland top-scored with 44 and Tim Funnell made 40.
In reply, Seaford succumbed to a paltry 48 all out in 25 overs, Alan Cooper the only batsman in double figures, with 14, although Extras, with 19, was highest scorer.
Adam Devlin returned incisive and misely figures of 4-9 in eight overs while Daniel Pellett weighed in with figures of similar quality (3-4 in seven overs).
The only other game to go ahead in the division was Henfield v Keymer & Hassocks, which ended in a draw.
The three other matches in the division – Ansty v Lewes Priory, Burgess Hill v Crowhurst Park and Crawley v Lindfield – were all called off.
In 2nd XI Division One, there were draws in the three games: between Brighton & Hove and East Grinstead, Eastbourne and Three Bridges, and Hastings Priory and Horsham.
Preston Nomads won by 66 runs away to Chichester Priory Park.
Worthing’s game at home to Cuckfield was abandoned.
