Undercooked Hailsham fall four short of target of SIXTY-ONE

ESCL Division Two: Rye* 61 Hailsham 57

Hailsham travelled to Rye for their first league game of the season, despite very little practice or game time in pre-season – which might explain how they managed to fall four runs short of a target of SIXTY-ONE.

Under the guidance of new captain Ciaran Treloar and with new signings Darren Moore and Chris Britton in the team, Hailsham were in confident mood.

The game could not have started any better for Hailsham. Having won the toss and elected to bowl first in damp, green conditions, the bowlers set about their jobs perfectly, with Treloar (4-13) setting the early tone. He was very well supported by Will Slemmings (1-9 in six overs) and Chris Britton.

Then, just before drinks with the home team struggling on 33-4, Mart Archer joined the party. Wickets tumbled quickly and soon Rye were all out for 61. Archer finished with the astonishing figures of 5-5 off five overs, while smart catches from Moore and Slemmings helped Hailsham’s cause.

Sandun Dias and Richard Weller were the only batsmen to reach double figures, both falling to Archer on 16.

With eight overs to bat before tea, Hailsham knew Rye would come at them hard and so they did. Hailsham lost three wickets and found themselves at 13-3.

And despite Mike Ambler batting the whole way through for 26 not out, Hailsham regularly lost wickets along the way and came up four runs short in a entertaining yet disappointing start to their 2012 season.

The wickets were shared around the Rye bowlers. Craig Pierce took 4-14, Sandun 3-22, Martin Blincow 2-5 off four overs and Gary Willis 1-9 off six overs.

The Perry Winkles Man of the Match went to Archer for a devastating spell of spin bowling.

OTHER RESULTS: Battle v Crowborough abandoned; Chiddingly v Bells Yea Green cancelled; Fletching v Robertsbridge abandoned; Laughton v Newick cancelled.
