Diary of a Dart Play with Andy Relf at the Eastbourne Open
Day one at the Eastbourne Open… I played a lad called Dan Read… well that was short lived! He played like a demon, and I nearly played like one, so that was the singles over for the day!
So to the Mixed Triples. Myself, Tammy McKenzie from London, and John Jenkinson of Surrey, won a couple of rounds, then came across a team that had a bit of fortune.
In the deciding leg their lady player was left with double two, with me waiting on tops.
She stuck the first dart about a foot below the board in the timber surround, at which point I turned to John almost knowing what was coming next – sure enough, next dart straight in the double! Why does that happen?
On Sunday I fared better, reaching the last 32 of the singles, where missed doubles cost me dearly. Into the pairs with John, and we also had a good run, reaching the last 16.
Winners over the weekend were:
Open: Jim Withers beat Johnny Haines 5-4
Men’s Saturday: Johnny Haines beat Ken MacNeil
Ladies: Sue Waterman beat Shirley Castle
Youth: Joshua McCarthy beat Andrew Clark
Open Pairs: Johnny Haines / Paul Cook beat Robbie Turner / Michael Caines
Hopefully numbers will be up for next year’s event, as sadly this year clashed with a BDO County weekend, and also a PDC tournament in Spain meaning that many regulars stayed away.
On to Superleague on Wednesday, and the Nomads were away to Hailsham, my favourite away trip, as it’s five minutes from home. Our boys won 7 – 2, putting us top of the table, and carried on my unbeaten run with a 3-0 win over Don Stone.
Time for some real practice this week, as next weekend is the first PDC UK Open Qualifiers of the year at the K2 in Crawley.
