Even on a social visit to watch darts Andy gets roped in
THE past week has been pretty hectic both on and off the dart board; it'll be good to be getting away for a few days over the weekend with only a couple of PDC tournaments to worry about.
By the time that you are reading this, I'll hopefully be very near to Gibraltar, and possibly that rare sight, sunshine.
First of all, some fantastic news for me this week, I have been approached by Red Dragon Darts to become one of their sponsored players. Red Dragon is a huge mail order darts supplier, with a superb website also at www.reddragondarts.com.
The company is owned by the Winmau Group, and for me to be linked with these companies is quite hard for me to believe.
My name will now appear alongside the household names of Dennis Priestley, Mark Webster, Andy Fordham and Simon Whitlock, to name but a few.
The popularity of this column and its subsequent inclusion into Darts World magazine has raised my profile in the sport, so thanks for reading everybody.
On the darting front, last Friday I went out socially as our team didn't have a match, and went to the Three Cups in Punnetts Town, to watch Captain Sheebo in action for his own Friday team in the Heathfield League.
I hadn't intended playing, but his team were a man short, so I got roped in to play.
I played Henry Grant, a very good player, but luckily for me, I managed to win.
Later on in the pairs the shout went up from Henry of "180", quickly followed by "stick that in the Sussex Express", well who am I to argue.
I won't mention that his next throw was three!
Over the weekend, I played in the Eastbourne Open.
On Saturday I played well, before losing out to Kent county player Dan Russell after I'd missed three darts to win it.
On Sunday, the singles was a bit of a disaster, as I lost first round to Surrey's Phil Millburn. Fellow PDC player Aaron Monk won the singles event.
In the pairs myself and Adrian Gray faired much better, finally bowing out in the quarter finals, so we had a good run there.
In the John Smiths Pub Challenge, I beat my Hastings team mate Mick Evans in the semi final, setting up a meeting with John Reed of the Railway Club on the big stage.
I'm not quite sure what happened when I got on stage, but every dart I threw was going high of where I was aiming, so adjusting my stance had to take place, but that didn't help either. John won the final, but neither of us set the world alight!
Tuesday I played for the Bell at Burwash, I won my match and played really well, unfortunately the team lost the match in the deciding leg.
On Wednesday I went down with my second bout of 'Man Flu' since Christmas.
It's been a great start to 2010! I still made it to the singles league at the Royal Albert in Hastings though.
I won my first match five nil, hit a 110 outshot, so gained 6 points, and in the second match I won 4 legs to 1. Not a bad night, as I closed the gap on leader Adi Gray slightly.
Now it is off to Gibraltar, and the start of what promises to be an exciting and very important year ahead on the PDC Pro Tour.
