The voice of the Viking
THIS week has been pretty quiet on the darting front, only a match in the Harvey League on Tuesday, and the Sussex Superleague on Wednesday for me to write about really.
Before the darts this week, I attended the British Superbike Championships at Brands Hatch on Sunday, and was surprised to hear the voice of Andy 'The Viking' Fordham being interviewed over the PA system.
Andy had also been to Silverstone the week before for the World Superbikes, and had played a few challenge matches.
He did admit that he was actually beaten by British racing star, Leon Haslam in one match, but was quick to point out that he was looking forward to getting his own back in a race on the track!
Back to the darts, and our King's Head side were away to a strong team from the Corn Exchange in Hailsham. I went on first and won, and we had a really good, competitive evening.
We eventually lost the match 5–4, with missed doubles in the deciding leg proving to be our downfall.
The following evening, and it was super league. My new team the Eastbourne Railway Club were away to the Hailsham M.I. Luckily for me, this away venue only takes me three minutes to get to!
My trend of getting late draws continues, and I'm out in the eighth game… a two and a half hour wait before I'm on!
I had to chalk the first game of the evening which was our Roy Linfield, against Hailsham's Donna Rainsley. Roy obviously didn't want to be on stage for too long, and put in a great performance winning 3-0.
The match is already won for my team when I go on, with John Reed taking the victory for us in the match before mine.
Really there should be no pressure on me then. I'd been practicing well, and had even hit back-to-back 180s, so was confident for a good game.
That changed as soon as I stepped up onto the stage, I did go 2-0 up, but my opponent clawed back to 2–2, and had the throw in the deciding leg.
Finally in that last leg I managed to hit what I was aiming for and took the win. I was not happy with my performance, but I suppose a win is a win.
Maybe because we had already won I didn't concentrate hard enough, I will try not to let that happen again – must take my practice game to the match board at all times!
