Reigning champions Peacehaven were knocked out of the Sussex Senior Cup in the Second Round by Burgess Hill Town on Wednesday night.

A 90th minute goal by Hillians’ captain Darren Budd decided the tie with just 10 seconds to go.

Peacehaven started the stronger but Hill then gradually got into and had the majority of the chances in the second half.

Hillians manager Ian Chapman said: “We wanted to be in the game with 20 minutes to go and were. We then tried to get the result and were pleased we managed to get a goal so late they had no chance of coming back from it.

“We brought Pat (Harding) and Greg Luer on as they’ve scored most of our goals this season.

“In the second half we were by far the better side. The first half was quite even although we had the better chances.

“Fortunately we had a bit of magic by Buddy and a great finish and we’re pleased to be in the hat.

“It was a case of not going too gung-ho and trying not to leave ourselves open against a side a league above us and have some quality players.

“In the end if you look at the chances and possession I thought we deserved getting through.

“I thought we defended brilliantly as a team - not just the back-four but the whole team and kept another good clean sheet.

Peacehaven looked in charge in the first 20 minutes. Tom Burton got through in front of goal but knocked his shot wide.

Hillians grew stronger as the half went on as Dan Perry went on a run and shot powerfully only to see his effort blocked by Sami El-Abd.

Hill’s Perry supplied Scott Kirkwoood for a 20-yard shot which was well held by keeper Anthony Di Bernardo.

Perry then ran clear in a breakaway attack but had his shirt pulled by Sam Fisk and he was forced to release the ball without shooting before it was then cleared.

In the closing stages Perry struck a powerful shot first time into the grateful arms of keeper Di Bernardo.

Peacehaven’s Jamie Brotherton had replaced the injured Tom Lawley in the first half and saw his shot deflected into Josh James’s arms.

Hill substitute Pat Harding lifted a shot over the crossbar.

Finally in the last minute Budd created a goal out of nothing, running into space he fired from 25 yards straight into the net. There were less than ten seconds to go when they kicked off.

Disappointed Magpies manager Shaun Saunders said: “A game is never over until it’s over ‘till is it? And we just switched off at the end there and fair play to them it was a decent goal from their point of view but we didn’t defend very well.

“As a consequence of it we find ourselves out of it. But that’s football! Burgess Hill have won all but one of their games this season and are a good side. They played well and I wish them all the best in the next round.”
