Bexhill United’s footballers were knocked out of the Sussex Principal RUR Charity Cup after conceding three first half goals last night (Tuesday).

The Pirates rallied through second half strikes by Jordan Woodley and Nathan Tudor, but their deficit in the second round tie ultimately proved just too much to overturn as they lost 3-2 at home to Langney Wanderers.

Bexhill’s cause wasn’t helped by several late withdrawals, including manager Marc Munday, who was in hospital until the early hours of Wednesday morning after putting a nail through his finger at work.

“The first half was horrendous; we just weren’t at the races at all,” said assistant manager Marc Gall, who took charge of the side in Munday’s absence. “You can’t concede three goals and win every game you play.

“At half time I went through a few home truths and second half I got the reaction I was looking for. We were by far the better team second half and that becomes more frustrating. If we had played another five minutes, I think we would’ve got an equaliser.

“It’s frustrating that we can do it, but we don’t do it for long enough spells. If we had started the game at half time, we would’ve comfortably beaten them.”

The hosts performed okay during the opening 15 minutes of an all-Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Division One affair before hitting the self-destruct button.

Several individual errors led to the opening Langney goal, which was scored by Shane Saunders with a looping header from the edge of the box at a free kick.

Wayne Wilkinson doubled Langney’s lead by slipping the ball past Yankuba Camara from a one-on-one situation. Saunders was then given too much time to chest the ball down and volley home number three.

Bexhill were a different proposition in the second half and Woodley pulled one back with an absolute screamer from 40 yards into the top corner. Nathan Tudor made it 3-2 in the 90th minute following a bit of a scramble, but an equaliser proved elusive.

Bexhill: Camara; Cooper, G. Aston, Cruikshank, Ottley; Barden, J. Aston, Elliott-Noye, N. Tudor; Cumming-Bart, Woodley. Subs: Buckley, A. Tudor.
