An understrength Lewes side were beaten 1-0 by local rivals Hastings United in the Ryman League Cup at the Pilot Field on Tuesday night.
Sussex rivals Hastings were also without a number of their first team regulars, having rested most of them in preparation for their home FA Cup tie with Blackfield & Langley tomorrow (Saturday). But it was the hosts who fared better with their back-up players.
Lewes went behind early on and struggled to impose themselves thereafter. But to be fair, the goal that won the game for the U’s was a spectacular one, worthy of winning any game.
Scott McDonald’s spectacular overhead kick in the 12th minute was enough to separate the sides in an evening which saw Lewes boss Simon Wormull make his first appearance, from the bench, after completing a welcome return from injury.
