Hailsham Town have signed up a host of new players as the new-look Stringers squad continues to take shape.
The Beaconsfield management duo of Andy Goodchild and Howard Stevens sealed the signatures of no fewer than seven new players yesterday, and revealed they were hopeful of keeping a core of last year’s squad too – as well as bringing yet more new names to the club.
The players brought into the club, the Sussex Express understands (club joining from is in brackets), are: Sheldon Levitt (Seaford Town), Aaron Filsell (Eastbourne Utd), James Pozzoli (Kentish Town), Andrew Whittingham (Seaford Town), Oliver Davies (Seaford Town), Harry Mills (Seaford Town), Patrick Johnson (Eastbourne Borough) and Kirk Ferguson (Eastbourne United).
Hailsham joint manager Andy Goodchild said: “Further signings are expected next week ahead of the first friendly at home to Chipstead (next Saturday).”
He described the players the club was bringing in as “good players who want to play possession football”.
Of last season’s Hailsham side, Goodchild confirmed: “A few have gone but some have stayed and a number are training.
“We are hopeful of re-signing Shane Saunders, Simon Stevens and Steve Early. Danny Willams has stayed which is great. We had already lined up two new keepers.”
The two departing players that the Stringers joint boss would have liked to have kept are Danny Leach and Ashley Jarvis. They have both joined former Hailsham boss Kenny McCreadie at Bexhill United.
Goodchild said: “Whilst disappointing I respect their decision to follow their previous manager to a lesser division.
“Whilst Danny was a prolific goalscorer I would prefer to spread the distribution of regular goals across four or five attacking players rather than rely on any one individual.”
Speaking earlier in the week, before yesterday’s news of the further seven new squad additions, Goodchild said: “We have signed (goalkeeper) Sheldon Levitt from Seaford and expect a good number of new signings over the next week following good numbers at both training sessions in the last week.
“He replaces Benoit Beaucomp who has transferred to Crawley Down Gatwick.”
Goodchild admitted he was ‘excited’ about the club’s FA Cup and FA Vase draws. The Stringers will go away to Molesey of the Combined Counties League in the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup on Saturday August 17, while in the FA Vase First Qualifying Round thay travel to Chessington & Hook United, also of the Combined Counties League on, Saturday September 7.
Pre-season friendlies (all at the Beaconsfield) begin on Saturday July 20 with the visit of Ryman League Chipstead, before playing Mile Oak (Tue 23), Eastbourne Town (Thu 25), Halstead Town (Sat 27), Polegate Town (Tue 30), Seaford Town (Wed 3t) and Eastbourne United (Sat August 3).
The games against Chipstead, Halstead and Eastbourne United will be double headers. All games are evening matches, kick off at 7.30pm.
