Jack’s fantastic but we just need to keep him on the leash, admits Rooks boss Wormull

Simon Wormull hailed midweek goalscoring hero Jack Walder as “fantastic” but admitted he and his management team had been working hard to keep their passionate midfielder “on the leash”.
The quality midfielder scoring the winning goal against Lowestoft with just 11 minutes to go on Tuesday, and overall put in a magnificent shift in the centre of the park.
But the feisty Walder has also been known to get himself in the referee’s bad books – having already been cautioned seven times this season, and receiving a one-match ban in the process for reaching the five-booking mark (although to be fair to Walder – who played the full 90 minutes against Lowestoft on his continued return to full fitness following injury – most of those booking took place in games right at the very start of the season).
And Wormull, speaking after Tuesday’s win, said: “Jack’s going to get fitter and fitter each game. He’s a fantastic player for us, we’ve just got to make sure we keep him on the leash really, because we can’t afford to have him out suspended.
“It’s just a case of making sure he understands we need to keep him on the pitch to have our best chance of winning the game.
“But he did great today.
“He doesn’t just give us the tackling side of it, he’s decent on the ball, he’s a leader – he wants to win. And that’s what we need.”
Wormull added that Tuesday’s home game with Eastbourne United AFC in the Sussex Senior Cup offers the opportunity for run outs for fringe players and those returning from injury. He said: “There’s probably going to be four or five that played tonight that won’t even be involved next Tuesday.
“It’ll give myself, Callum (Dunne), Max (Howell), and other people 90 minutes under their belt, because we are going to be needed. Come Christmas period we’ve got some very important games and like you saw today, Joe (Kay) came on at left back and did well – and we’re going to need everyone, we haven’t got a big squad!
“But it’s a good squad and I hope it’s given them a lot of confidence tonight.”
That Eastbourne United AFC game is a 7.45pm kick off. Entry is £5 for adults, while kids go free as usual.
Asked if Wormull might select himself on the bench for tomorrow’s (Saturday) Met Police game in the league, he said: “We’ll see. We’ll see how we go with the players and how people are feeling. If need be then I will do.
“But tonight I just felt I needed to be on the side just so I could get people playing how I wanted them to today, get that discipline. Which they did, they did it fantastically.”
