Lewes 0-2 Chelmsford

LEWES were not at the races as they were comfortably beaten 2-0 by Chelmsford despite the visitors playing with ten men for more than half of the game.

Home stopper Rikki Banks was called into action inside a minute to deny Matthew Lock at point blank range and it set the pattern for most of the first half.

Chelmsford created several good chances but found Banks a tough obstacle to overcome and on 38 minutes they were reduced to ten men when Marlon Patterson tripped David Wheeler and was adjudged to be last man.

But instead of it signalling a turn in the tide the visitors went ahead in the last minute of the half when Robert Edmans poked in Ben Martin's header across goal.

Despite the man disadvantage Chelmsford continued as the team more likely to net again and they did just that when skipper David Rainford lashed in an effort after his initial free kick had come back off the wall.

Lewes's play lacked invention and they failed to put any significant pressure on Chelmsford's back line, their only shot on target a Joe Keehan volley which was straight down the throat of Ashley Harrison in the visiting goal.

The win moves Chelmsford up a place into second while Lewes remain third from bottom, two points behind Worcester City - Lewes's next opposition - who were beaten 2-0 by Havant & Waterlooville.
