Lewes 2-2 Braintree Town

LEWES came from two down to snatch an impressive 2-2 draw at home to promotion challengers Braintree Town today (Saturday).

The Rooks weren't at the races for the first 44 minutes of the game as the visitors raced into a 2-0 lead through Sean Marks and George Purcell goals.

Braintree could well have been further ahead but the game spun in the last minute of the half.

A rare Lewes break forced a corner and when Chris Breach's header was scrambled out by a mixture of goalkeeper Craig Holloway and post Joe Keehan was there to bundle in some hope for the hosts.

Steve Ibbitson's Lewes came out for the second half rejuvenated and far more confident having found a way back into the match.

Braintree seemed to sit back and invite Lewes onto them and with four minutes to go they were punished.

Skipper Anthony Barness found top scorer Joe Keehan in the box and the midfielder took a touch to tee himself up for a fine volley which looped over Holloway and into the net for his tenth goal of the season.

There were defeats for relegation threatened Weymouth, Weston-Super-Mare and Worcester although Hampton & Richmond's 2-0 win at Basingstoke keeps Lewes in the bottom three of the Blue Square South.

Lewes' next fixture is the Sussex Senior Cup third round replay against Hastings on Tuesday evening at the Dripping Pan.
