Mix of youth and new signings key: Ibbo

LEWES boss Steve Ibbitson believes his side's new signings and youth players are going to be the key to success this season.

The Rooks beat Horsham 3-0 on Tuesday in what was a useful run-out for his side although he was actually impressed by his opponents.

A highlight of the game was George Jones' wonder goal in which he picked up the ball in his own half, ran with it 60 yards, and sped past a couple of players before curling it into the top corner.

Ibbo said: "I was impressed with Horsham and I thought the scoreline flattered us a bit. But I was pleased with the performance.

"Our new players are playing well and things are beginning to gel.

"Marc Pullan will give us a big presence at the back and Simon Wormull is getting things going in midfield. He has got tremendous passing ability and should form a good partnership in midfield with Lewis Ide (ex-Brighton scholar and Bognor), who is very energetic."

Ibbo praised Jones and said it is not the first time he has seen him score such a goal. He said: "We've got a good crop of youngsters which are highly promising. With the financial situation as it is at the club, we will have to rely on them. Seven of them featured in our friendly against Worthing and another four against Horsham.

"They have already demonstrated they can hold their own against opposition of a good standard.

"George has already done that a couple of times in youth matches, and now he has done it at senior level. He's a talented player but he's not the only one, in fact he's one of several we have. But I know George is someone who forces his way into a team and stays there."

The other goals came from Rob Gradwell and Tom Murphy.

Jones will miss this Saturday's home game against Blue Square Bet Premier club Hayes & Yeading because he has a Saturday job. However, one player who will be in action will be striker Gradwell, 21, who has joined Lewes permanently after a loan spell last season from Hayes.

So he will be eager to make a good impression against his old club, who have themselves made a number of new signings.

Ibbo added: "The important thing for Rob is to get some match minutes. Hayes are a very strong side, having bought in some good players over the summer, so this will be a tough but useful test for us as we prepare for the league campaign.

"I hope we should get a good crowd on Saturday."
