In the Ladies’ stableford on July 3rd Maggie Kay’s 33 points won Div One by a distance, and Alison Hailwood, also 33, took Div Two by almost as much.
But in Div Three in a triumphant return to form Stella Coppen on the outer rail almost caught Sue Connor’s 34.
Then on Saturday the men played for the Mann Scratch Cup and the Gaunt Plate. The Mann Cup was presented in 1958 by HU Mann, Club Captain at the time, for a 36-hole singles scratch strokeplay competition to determine the Club Champion. To encourage more participation, in 1990 Gavin Gaunt gave the Gaunt Plate as a handicap prize for a simultaneous 36 holes.
This year Anthony Ross destroyed the field with a remarkable 36-hole total of 144 gross (71 and 73). Joe White was second with 156 (78 and 78) and Paul Bougon third with 159 (77 and 82). Congratulations to Anthony, the new Club Champion! He had the best handicap score too, but no-one can win both trophies, so the Gaunt Plate went to Josh Clarkson for his nett 133.
The Generations League, for adult/junior pairings playing in a greensomes format, reached its third round on Sunday. Once again the standard was high and the spirit bracing (overlooking the son’s mirth when his dad duffs the opening drive just past the ladies’ tee). This time Louis Montfort Bebb and his father Torqvil shook the field with a storming last nine of 24 points, which took them up to fourth in the league table. The consistent Crickmores remain top – but they will be away for the next round on July 19th so there is still hope for the others. Further dates are August 3rd, 16th and 30th, and anyone who wants to join in will be welcome.
