Battle continues for Newick Bowls Club on two fronts

THE battles continue. Despite going down on two rinks and collecting only two points at Uckfield, Newick’s Mid-Sussex team continues to hang on in Division 1 where they are now eight points clear of bottom team Buxted Park. Lindfield are undisputed champions with 11 points ahead of West Hoathly, their nearest rivals, with only one more game to go.

In their fight for promotion from Division 3 of the John Spriggs League, Newick managed to come away from Downsman at Crawley with six of the 10 points on offer. Jan Ainsley, Barry Mansfield, Colin Burrows and Ken Cunningham managed to win by a big enough margin to make up for defeat on the other two.

Next week’s final game is at home against Crowborough Wolfe who took all the points a couple of weeks ago in the away game.

The two teams now sit at the top of the table on 62 points each with Newick just ahead on shot difference. Watch this space!

Bowlers from all over Mid-Sussex were at Newick on Sunday for their Annual Invitation Triples Day.

In the three-end final at the end of a long day’s bowling, the mixed Buxted Park/Deanland team, Michael Rew, Sheila Turner and Peter Jepson were never in contention against the St Francis triple, Mike Fowler, Veronica Morphew and Colin Morphew who won all three ends. Jeff Elmer and Betty Turk won the target bowls competitions. The day was organised by David Lawrence and Bob Younger with enthusiastic help from many club members.
