A GREAT home win for Newick against Uckfieldlast Tuesday, mostly in the pouring rain.

Keith Mellor, playing his first game as league captain, had his rink going great guns throughout but John Baker’s was well down in the first half of the evening and Des Foord’s was ding-donging very closely.

However, John and his four took advantage as Mel Woodham’s rink began to struggle on longer jacks and finished up with a five shot lead.

Des’s rink managed an extra dong and won by one shot.

This moved Newick two places up the league table only one point behind Buxted Park who are third but 16 points behind the leaders, West Hoathly. Next week it’s bottom of the table Lindfield away.

Newick 65 Uckfield 39: Des Foord 18 Adrian Wainwright 17, John Baker 18 Mel Woodham 13, Keith Mellor 29 Phil Soper 9.

In the John Spriggs against Haywards Heath Newick started well and Ron Pateman’s rink was leading 15-2 but they could not cope when the rain came. Ron finished up 17-17, the only Newick rink not to lose. The single point earned left them sitting on the bottom of their table.

As part of the centenary celebrations Newick played a representative Mid-Sussex League team last Monday, winning convincingly.

Newick 126 Mid-Sussex 88: John Baker 20 Tony Jarvis 11, Janet Birch 14 Joy Reynolds 27, Howard Ainsley 17 Les Jones 14, Peter Carter 22 Colin Morphew 15, Maurice Awcock 31 Derek Heather 10, June Page 22 Terry Hedderman 11.
