Newcomers to competitive racing put in excellent performances for Heathfield Road Runners at the last cross country event of the year on Sunday.

Firle was the third race in the East Sussex Sunday Cross Country calendar, providing a hilly 4.9-mile course starting high up at Firle Beacon. A rare break in the rain on Sunday left soggy conditions and high winds for the 170 entrants, 27 of whom were from the combined Heathfield/Uckfield team.

Mik Stiller, Wendy Robson and Tom Ayerst were amongst HRR’s first-timers putting in great performances with 40.29, 45.45 and 47.01.

Others (position, time): James Cox (9, 33.38); Paul Rigden (27th, 37.08); Terry Everest (30, 37.35); Rowan Baker (32, 37.39); Cedric Clemerson (45, 39.12); Will Blandford (51, 40.09); Ryan West (59, 40.35); Bev Chapman (60, 40.38); Graham Chapman (68, 41.28); Doug Andrews (69, 41.36); Shaun Furlong (76, 42.03); Graham West (77, 42.08); Paul Bailey (97, 44.12); Mick Elmes (99, 44.37); Rachael Hornigold (115, 45.36); Catherine Harker (135, 47.55); Mike Churchyard (147, 49.59); Tanya Edmonson (148, 50.12); Rob Negus (150, 50.36); Fleur Blandford (151, 51.03); Peter Wilkes (152, 51.17); Helen Atkin (155, 53.09); Louise Crocombe (156, 53.57); Adele Harvey (169, 66.54).

The next race in the league is at Snape Wood on January 13.
