Regular readers of the Sussex Express will know we predicted that last week’s National Banger meeting at Arlington would be the biggest held at ‘The Old Lady’ for 40 years... and we were proved correct.

Spectators were queuing outside in the blazing sunshine from 4pm on Wednesday last week, and so in the interests of safety the turnstiles were opened early.

Incredibly, with the car park already full to capacity, at race time the crowd was still struggling to get into the stadium.

There were two wild card places to be determined over the evening, and so without further delay, it was on with the racing.

More than 80 drivers from right across the country descended on the Sussex oval to compete in round eight of the Spedeworth Banger World Series, the last opportunity to win a wild card into the World final held in October at the Foxhall Stadium, Ipswich.

Our area was well represented, with four of the popular Newhaven-based Bears team in attendance. Team captain Nigel Riley was joined by son Ashley and Neill Osborne and Kieron Fry.
