Diary of a Darts Player with Andy Relf

A STRANGE week on the dartboard… some days they go… some days they don’t!

I’ve actually had a couple of good sessions of practice in the last week, the first for quite some time. Everything was looking positive again, and I was happy with how I was playing.

On Tuesday, we had the qualifiers of the Harvey League men’s singles, and I was drawn out to play at the King’s Head in South Road Hailsham. The group of players that were drawn out to play there were what could be classed as the ‘Group of Death’. With only six of us there, it meant that I had three matches to win to qualify for the quarter finals. First up was Brian Linfield, I started really well in this match, and won in 16 and 18 darts, which isn’t too shabby considering it is double in!

My second game was against Gary Pope, not such a good performance, but I still won two nil.

Lastly, the final of the night against a lad called Darren who plays for the M.I. He had played well all night, and his finishing was superb. He won the first leg, and was on course to win the second when he hit double trouble and I sneaked the leg to level at 1-1.

Deciding leg, and I get away well, and score heavily giving me the overall win… job done, but I could have easily lost that final.

So to Wednesday, and it’s Superleague against Bexhill.

To say my season isn’t going too well is an understatement! I won the first week, lost last week, and this week I’m drawn out against the one and only Shayne ‘The Bulldog’ Burgess. As soon as the battle commences, I get the darting equivalent of ‘The Yips’, and I’m missing the target by a fraction.

I’m right with Shayne all the way, but he takes out his shots, and gets the win. I’d lost again, and so did the team.

Hopefully I’ll get to put that right on Friday evening, as 16 of us are playing in a competition, including Wayne Mardle, Tony Ayres, Shayne, Adi Gray etc. Should be a good bit of preparation for the weekends PDC Players Championships in Crawley.

On Saturday evening, I’ve helped to organise a charity darts evening at the Uckfield Club. It is in aid of the Children with Cancer charity, so a very worthwhile cause.

I’ve got a few PDC people I know coming along; Justin Pipe, Adrian Gray, Under 21 PDC World Champ Arron Monk, and rumour has it that a certain Mr Anderson might be somewhere around for a while… dunno much about him, but he can throw a bit I’ve heard!

This should be a great night, and for a great cause, so why not pop in to the Uckfield Club on Saturday 21st May at 7.30pm. Huge raffle and chances to play some great players.
