Lewes suffered their fourth successive defeat and their sixth in seven games with a single goal loss at East Thurrock United on Saturday.
And it was a hotly-disputed penalty that prived the difference between the sides.
Ten minutes into a bitterly cold afternoon at Rookery Hill in Essex, Lheureux Menga was impeded by Kieron Thorp on the edge of the area.
But the referee pointed to the spot – much to the surprise of the Lewes players. The visitors insisted the foul took place outside the area, but – despite consulting with his assistant – the decision to award a penalty stood.
Sam Higgins put the spot kick away to ultimately claim the points.
Lewes suffered a frustrating afternoon, with a Ben Godfrey header that bounced off the top of the crossbar the closest they came to scoring.
The Rooks will be desperate for a positive result in tomorrow (Tuesday) night’s home game with Carshalton Athletic. Kick off is 7.45pm.
Team: Thorp, Brinhurst, Hamilton, Walder (c), Malins, Mogwo, Wormull (Kay), Brewer, Crabb, Godfrey, Schaaf (Ozga). Subs not used: Lewis, Stubbings. Att: 125.
