Shortly after sunrise on Saturday 21st June at Pyecombe the Green keepers were putting the finishing touches to the course for Pyecombe’s weekend of the Men’s’ Club Championship and the week of the Ladies Club Championship.
The resident wildlife had an early wake up call as mowers buzzed and the rolling Iron hummed across the greens; the scene was set for an exacting test for the premier golfers at the club. Glorious sunshine and little wind added to the very special atmosphere as members set to battle against a course set up to test the very best.
Fast firm running greens added to the challenge in the events that eventually succeeded in seeing the best golfers head the field..
82 Men battled it out over two rounds, with rough ready to grab errant drives over all 36 holes, and saw the competition decided upon only when the final pair completed the 18th.
The members who kept it all together were, in the nett competition, playing for the Warren Cup, were in fifth Paul Cook with 148, fourth Matt Greenfield with 147, third Mark Kemp with 146, runner up Julian Deans with 144, but the winner of the Warren Cup winner and Nett Champion was Matt Redmore with a nett total of 142.
In the Club Championship Scratch Competition, playing for the Campion Cup, in fifth was Drew Bailey with a score of 154, fourth was Trevor Greenfield with 152, third was Richie Farmer with 152, runner up was Julian Deans with 150 and the winner was Matt Greenfield with a magnificent 147, the excited gallery watching as Matt Greenfield just edged out the tenacious Julian Deans to become the Champion Golfer of 2014.
